R is for Reverence Proverbs 31 Mother/Daughter Lesson 2

Session 2:  R for Reverence

1.  Icebreaker:  Girls name mom’s biggest pet peeve and where they think their mother would like to go on vacation.

Seasonal Icebreaker:  Thanksgiving fun Turkey Dressing
Divide into 2 equal groups.  Give each group a paper sack with the following.
Newspaper, 1 pair of panty hose, 4 sheets of tissue paper, 1 roll of toilet paper, scissors, and tape
Have the team make a turkey out of a person.
  1.  Teaching:  Reverence
What does reverence mean?
a feeling of profound respect for someone or something, an attitude of admiration or esteem, or honor
Eccl 12:13
13      Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man.
How do we show reverence to God?
    1.  Fear God and keep his commandments.
Children obey your parents in the Lord for this is right.  Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.  If we honor our parents we will honor God.
  2. Be reverent in the house of God.
Did you know that in the Old Testament the pastors of the church were called priests?  The priests were the people elected by God to go and offer sacrifices for the sins of the people.  But before they could go into the holy of holies they had to purify themselves.  The priests actually wore a robe with bells on the bottom of the robe and if they entered the Holy of Holies and the bells stopped ringing then that meant that they had sin in their life and the people would have to pull them out.  They could not stand before the Lord with purifying their life.  Did you know God wants us to live in holiness and be reverent to God today.  In 1 Peter 2:29 the Bible says you are a royal priesthood.

Ex:  Samuel’s sons who did not show reverence eventually died.
Ex:  Mary Sue was a wiggler. When she sat on the front row in church, she wiggled. When it was singing time, she wiggled. Even when she listened to her teacher, Mrs. Cardon, give a lesson, she wiggled.
“Mary Sue,” her teacher would say, “please stop wiggling.”
She tried to sit still. She really did. But then her legs would start swinging back and forth, back and forth. And before she knew it, she was wiggling again.
Then one Sunday, Mrs. Cardon said, “Boys and girls, I have a special Bible story to tell you.”
Mary Sue liked stories. She scooted her chair a little closer to her teacher.
“This story is about how the little children came and listened to Jesus,” she said.
Mary Sue really loved stories about Jesus, so she scooted his chair even closer.
“Jesus Christ taught the people many wonderful things,” Mrs. Cardon said. “The people loved to listen to Him. And they loved to be near Him.”
She held up a picture of the Savior blessing the children. “He had all the children come to Him,” she said. “He took them one by one, and He prayed for them and blessed them.” Mary Sue could see that his teacher’s eyes were shiny with tears as she said, “Jesus Christ loves every child. He loves you.”
Mary Sue felt cozy and warm inside just like she felt when she snuggled up in her fuzzy green blanket. How she wished she could have been there with Jesus!
She looked at the picture again. There, sitting beside Jesus, was a little girl about the same age as Mary Sue. The girl was sitting very, very still, looking up at Jesus.
I could do that, Mary Sue thought. I could sit still if I were sitting by Jesus. All of a sudden, she knew how to stop being a wiggler.
Now whenever she sits in church, she imagines that Jesus is sitting right beside him. And Mary Sue hardly wiggles at all.
3.     If we show reverence to the Lord we will be wise.
Ps 119:9,10 The reverent fear and worship of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

3.  Spotlight of Honor:  Have mothers share.

4.  Activity: Proverbs 31 Scavenger Hunt
Hide unlined items in different parts of the house and the girls have to find them and bring them all back to win.  (See below)

5.  Snack:  Carmel mm apples

P is for Purity Proverbs 31 Mother/Daughter Lesson 1

Session 1 P for Purity

1.  Icebreaker:  How well do you know your daughter?  Give questions below to moms and another to the daughters and have both fill them out without sharing answers.  (See attached questions)  Have person compare answers and the mom who has the most correct wins a prize.

2.  Teaching:  Read the story “The Princess and the Kiss” by Jennie Bishop
    Ask the questions below:

1.  Do you remember why God gave the princess the Kiss?  It’s because he loved her so dearly.  God loves each and every one of you.

2.  Do you know that you have always been loved?  Just like the princess, you were loved even before you were born.  You are a special treasure

3.  What was the gift God gave the princess?  What did it present?  The gift represents purity.

4.  What is purity?   Webster’s say free from dirt, contamination or pollution.  Example of pure glass of water with pepper

1 Tim 4:12 Don’t let anyone put you down because you are young.  Teach believers with your life, by word, by conduct, by love by faith and by purity (integrity)

Purity is to keep ourselves free from pollution like bad attitudes, sassy back to our mothers, hurtful words to our brothers and sisters, free from being jealous of our friend’s toys or being jealous of when our friends have other friend spend the night.

5.  What is the princess really guarding when she keeps her kiss safe?  She is guarding her heart.  How do we guard our hearts?  Ex:  bodyguard at door We must guard the doors and what is the door to your heart your mind.  So we must be careful little eyes what we see, be careful little ears what you hear, be careful little hands what you touch.  What movies do we watch, what music do we listen to?  Must guard what we fill our minds with because that is what goes into your heart.

Prov 4:23-24
23      Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.
24      Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you.
(NKJ)

What will be the result of guarding your heart?  Matt 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.

6.  To whom did God give the kiss first when the princess was a baby?  Parents are your guardians.  Ex:  Umbrella.

We have been instructed to watch over you by the Lord.  Ex:  3 year old drive a car?  Foolish

7.  How was the princess wise?  Because she listened to her mother and father.  Prov. 1:8 Pay close attention friend to what your father tells you never forget what you learned at your mother’s knee.  What does God say about what will happen to those who honor their parents.  You will have long life and it will be well with you.

3.  Spotlight of Honor:  Have the mothers share one Christ like quality that the daughter has demonstrated that week.

4.  Activity:  Fashion Show:  Have girls bring in dress up clothes and have some older teenage girls help them get dressed and represent a country.  Then have the girls parade in with some fancy music for the mothers.

5.  Snack:  Serve sunglass cake (Family Fun recipe) and Shirley temples (ginger ale with cherries)

How well do you know your daughter?

 1.  What is her favorite color?

2.  What is her favorite toy?

                           3.  What is her favorite food?

"In You" Truths

I love to tell others who you are "in Christ" and the benefits of being a child of God. But the Bible actually has some several truths about who we are on our own—in other words, "in you" truths:

IN YOU, you are nothing.
“For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself” (Galatians 6:3).

IN YOU, you know nothing
“And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know” (1 Corinthians 8:2).

IN YOU, you have nothing
“For who made you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?” (1 Corinthians 4:7).

IN YOU, you can do nothing
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in Him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Before you get discouraged, remember the more we understand who we are (or aren’t) on our own, the more we will grasp and cling to WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST. John the Baptist said it well: "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30). The same applies with “in you” truths.

The more we understand who we are without Him, the stronger we will be when we grasp who we are with Him.

Sadly, however, many Christians aren’t aware of the truths I’m referring to. Their conversation, or thoughts, often say things like: "I can't do anything. I don't know anything. I don't have anything to give. I'm just a nobody." Well, believe it or not, I'm going to agree with the person that says these things, but, I'm not going to let them stay there!

The truth is: you and I are nothing without Jesus Christ. To help us understand, Jesus told this parable: "Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall" (Matthew 7:24-27).

Notice that the storms of life hit both lives. But the one who stood on the "rock," which represents God’s Word, continued to stand. And you will too.

When you build your life and self-esteem on who you are IN CHRIST (versus who you are on your own), then no matter what storm comes, you will stand strong and not fail! So, let me leave you with some contrasting scriptures to who you are IN CHRIST:

IN HIM, you are something
“For He made Him who knew no sin that you might become the righteousness of God in Him” (I Corinthians 5:21).

IN HIM, you know something
“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things” (I John 2:20).

IN HIM, you have something
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

IN HIM, you can do something
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

In other words, "IN HIM" you are awesome!

Creating Virtuous Memories for Mothers and Daughters

One of my goals for my family is to teach my daughters to be Proverbs 31 women.  So years ago the Lord placed in my heart a desire to create virtuous memories for mothers and daughters by teaching them how to be Proverbs 31 women.  My oldest daughter Emily was in 2nd grade and we began  "Proverbs 31 Moms and Daughters."  We would send pretty invitations to all of her close friends and their moms to come to our home and once a month we would create a precious, virtuous memory.
We would begin with a cute icebreaker, teach a short lesson on the character trait for the month, then have a spotlight of honor where the mothers would share honoring words about their daughters in front of their peers.  The event would end with an activity and snack.  It was a precious time of sowing values into the heart of young girls and mothers.  At the end of our time together we would light our candles and recite the acrostic: P for Purity, R for Reverence, O for Obedience, V for Virtue, E for Excellence, R for Respect, B for Beauty, and S for Sweet Servant.  At the end of our 9 months together we would celebrate with a special mother/daughter luncheon where we had a slideshow of our journey together, and presented each daughter with a special treasure box with cute things that would remind of us all we learned.

Over the next eight weeks I am going to contribute these ideas and teachings to hopefully inspire and equip young mothers with material that will create virtuous memories with their daughters in their sphere of influence.  May it be a inspiration to many!

Audaciously YOU

Can we be meek in nature, yet audacious about the plans of God?  Well, there is a question we can certainly ponder.

I say, “Absolutely!”

What is the definition of audacious? Showing a willingness to take a bold risk.

I love the encouragement we receive in Mathew 10:16, as the Lord tell us to “Be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”  How can these 2 things go together? Well, how can Christ be tender & compassionate, while at the same time make a rope & chase the moneychangers out of the temple?  You know, there is something about that I find intriguing!  I love the combo.

I can remember our early days in India when I carried a backpack about as big as me, & did countless other things I never dreamed I could do, trekking across India.  Later, people would say to my husband, “Your wife did what?”  I’m just going to add, we can be tough when we need to be.  We can arise to any occasion & do what the situation demands.  That’s just like Jesus!  As a default, we are tender & compassionate.  When the situation arises that deserves tenacity, we can be audacious!

Jesus displayed both responses in His actions & in His speech as well!

There were times when He wept with those He loved & reached out with words of compassion, like when Lazarus had died in John 11.  All the while, there were also occasions when he was outraged at the Pharisees & said to them, “You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right” (Mathew 10:16).   He was fearless! Seems to me Jesus learned this from the Father.

Time & time again we see God’s mercy extended towards the children of Israel.  He was so long suffering with them as they came through the wilderness. Then, we could watch when His judgment came down & sin without repentance was dealt with. Yes, lessons were inevitably learned about what He could not tolerate.

What’s the key to knowing which response we must bring to the table? We have to discern when we need to be soft spoken & when we need to be boldly courageous.

I can remember a time in the Ukraine when we were ministering shortly after the iron curtain had fallen.  In cold, old theaters we would fill the seats with Eastern Europeans hungry for the truth! One night, ever so sweetly, Russ shared about the love of Christ & the altar was filled with women giving their hearts to Jesus.  The next night, he felt more of a conviction to preach about hell with fervor in His word. Guess what happened?  The altar was filled with men!  Well, God knows what it takes to reach each one & he needed Russ to be willing to display both sides.

Not for all, but for most of us reading these words, the meek side is more natural; it’s the being gutsy moments that we refrain from.  Why? What are we afraid of?  My friends, it’s time to follow the promptings of God! Certainly, the miracles we see in the Bible came forth on audacious responses from men.  One great man of God said, “The difference between revival & no revival is a little bit of boldness.”

So, I issue a challenge today.  Yes, let’s remain ever so compassionate towards those who need our care, but let’s also be willing to jump off the bridge of boldness & bring forth the dreams of our heart!

Audacious?  Why not!

Words Matter

Not often, but there have been a few select times I’ve had the opportunity to attend Prayer Conferences and like so many others, I’ve had the divine privilege to sit in those meetings for a few days at the feet of some of the Generals of Prayers, such as Lynne Hammond, Patsy Cameneti and Rachel Teafatiller.  It has been during those times that not only have these precious women of God taught me, but I’ve also ‘caught’ things in prayer.  So many outstanding statements have been made during the course of the Prayer Sessions.  Here’s one outstanding statement made by Rachel Teafatiller during a Prayer Session in 2001 that has lodged deep within me and this word has found a home in my heart.  I’d like to share it with you:

“Honey, you gotta keep your eyes open and your mouth shut a lot and you’ve got to listen.  Now’s the time, we got to listen to what we say, what comes out of our mouth, because you’re going to walk in a day that everything that comes out of your mouth it will be done.  That day is coming upon you!  It’s here!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been under the strong dealings of God!  It’s not always been fun when you’re under His dealings, but after a while you’ll find yourself with a shout and a dance and you’re glad you were!  Especially since 2011, God has been dealing very strongly with me in regards to words, everything that comes out of my mouth and accountability for every word!  Yep, every word, and as you can see it lines right up with the profound statement that was made by Rachel Teafatiller and it lines up with the Word of God.  Matthew 12:36 (Amplified)  36 But I tell you, on the day of judgment men will have to give account for every [a]idle (inoperative, nonworking) word they speak.

The more I travel to the country of Haiti, the more I’ve discovered how important it is to learn the Haitian Creole language.  Learning this second language has opened a door to a whole new world for me!  Well, there’s a spiritual language that has done the very same thing for me!  I’m learning to do a lot more selective talking (about the right stuff) and to tame and discipline my tongue to say the right words.  A wise woman is looking for tomorrow and thinking about the impact and effect her actions and words today are going to have on her tomorrow.  What I say today frames my tomorrow!  The Word tells us what we say can mean life or death.  Those who speak with care will be rewarded (Proverbs 18:21 New Century) and I like rewards!  I like what the Message Bible vividly states, “…it’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words.”

Astounding!  What a scripture!  This is so powerful!  This is how God created the universe and this is how the universe is presently being upheld – WORDS.  Hebrews says, He is upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power.  The Word of God framed the world you and I live in.  God said, then something came into being.  God’s voice always precedes his hand (Genesis 1:3).  Now ladies, we’re not creating planets, but we need to be creating something.  He’s waiting for us to speak and not rely on someone else to speak for us.  Just think, our voice will precede His mighty hand!  The Holy Spirit is still hovering and brooding over our life and our mouth, watching and waiting for us to say what God says.  Did you know that you’re a companion with the Holy Ghost (The Spirit of Truth) in the realms of God and He so desires to connect with the truth spoken from our mouth.  He’ll move on the Word that we speak and bring it to pass!  Just thinking about that, stirs me up about speaking!

So, I’ve found myself not just saying everything I think these days.  I’m learning to control my soul (my responses, my mouth, my words) and consider my words more valuable and significant than ever!  I genuinely have an appreciation for how vital words are and I take them seriously.  My tongue is not just so I can express how I feel or think, although I love to express how I feel and think ~ especially to my husband!  I am a speaking spirit and the quality of my life is determined by my words!  So much is at stake, especially these days, and I refuse to allow unbelieving words to flow out of my mouth to give the enemy a license to operate – I can miss the perfect will of the enemy every day of my life if I choose words of life and not poison.  I can turn my life, my family, my business, my marriage, finances and any situation around with my mouth!

I’d like to share some of the scriptures that I’ve meditated on for endless hours over the past two years.  This year, after much faith and patience, I’m seeing how my tongue has held the key and as I’ve used it lovingly, it did requite me!  (Proverbs 18:21 Knox)  I’m seeing the fruition of selective saying!  I’m living by every word that proceeds out of my mouth and I’m eating the fruit of those words!  Thank you, Rachel Teafatiller!

So ladies, I trust you’re stirred up about speaking with a renewed fervor!  Together, let’s hold our words in the right direction and see things turn around!
