Schizophrenic Tongue

Put a straight jacket on that thing! Ever feel like your mouth has a mind of it’s own. You say things before you really think about it. Maybe you have gotten to a place in your life where you could care less what comes out of your mouth. You should. An uncontrolled tongue can bring a heap of problems to your doorstep. Proverbs 18:21 tells us, Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

What have you been eating? If what you have been experiencing in life is bitter, plain gross. You might want to check up on how you have been talking. You may think, “that’s stupid my words can not effect my life.”  Let’s prove it out.

First you need to stop having a schizophrenic tongue. You can’t be positive and nice out of one side and cuss like a sailor out the other. Okay, so maybe you don’t cuss like a sailor but what about being ugly, complaining, whining and being negative.

James 3:10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

For sure it’s not right! If it was possible to but a straight jacket on that little tongue of yours, I’m sure you would but how uncomfortable would that be? Not to mention no one would be able to understand a single thing you said. So how do you control that little beast?

It starts in your thoughts. What are you thinking about? Are you worrying, allowing yourself to get stressed and frustrated? Are you going over all the problems of yesterday?  Maybe it’s time to start trusting in God. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us, Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.  “He cares about you” almost seems like an understatement. He has given everything for you. There’s not one part of your life that He doesn’t want to get involved with. There’s a big difference when you are living from a place of trusting in God, trusting in Him to work in your life and looking to Him for direction. Back to that fiery tongue…we start to control it by thinking differently.

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things
Go ahead try it. Today, instead of looking for the problem, look for something right, pure and noble. Instead of cursing the incredibly slow driver in front of you, take that time to think about those you love. It’s amazing what you can find when you start looking for what is praiseworthy. Now, hook your mouth up with that. Start talking about those good things, encourage people, and tell those who love you that you love them back. Take control of your tongue and start eating the good life.
